Thundercat "For Love I Come" song review

“Cosmogramma” the third studio album from Flying Lotus was one of the best releases last year. It was certainly one of the most inventive and engaging albums that I have heard. It combined, jazz, soul, electronic bleeps and a whole lot more to create an enjoyable cosmic journey. One of the main contributors from the album was a bassist named Thundercat. His fast bass playing style gave “Cosmogramma” its distinctive sound that struck me on the first listen. In addition to that Thundercat lent his vocals on two tracks including the standout “HmmHmm”.

Thundercat is now stepping out as a solo artist and has an album coming out in the near future. The first single is titled “For Love I Come’. The song is a George Duke cover and it is produced by Flying Lotus. Fly Los’ imprint is all over this track, the use of the harp in the introduction is similar to the tracks on “Cosmogramma”. Synth lines buzz around the song, maintaining the spacey sound. However, Thundercat does have command of the track and holds his own against the veteran producer. His bass playing is restrained at the beginning of the song and becomes more intricate as the song progresses.

The vocals, sung in a falsetto work well with the track and they closely resemble George Duke. Thundercat yet manages to eclipse the original version by holding the song back and deceptively keeping it simple. This is an excellent song that is very well crafted further illustrating the great chemistry between Flying Lotus and Thundercat.

8/10

Song of the day will be "For Love I Come" by Thundercat.
