Wu-Tang Clan "Only the Rugged Survive" song review

“Only the Rugged Survive” is the new single from the legendary Wu-Tang Clan. The song will be featured on the new album entitled “Legendary Weapons” which will be dropping on June 26. The new album apparently will feature Ghostface and RZA on 8 of its 11 tracks. The production will be handled by RZA, with some help from other Wu-Affiliated producers. This is the first time since “8 Diagrams” that the collective has united to make a new album, with every member involved.

“Only the Rugged Survive’ features only the RZA on the mic. The song is an all out lyrical assault on the beat. The RZA does not let up; he allows his unique voice to command the track without overcrowding it and he maintains his humorous lyrics. RZA’s hilarious voice and flow makes it difficult to not laugh, even if he is being dead serious. The beat locks in a smooth groove that features some thumping bass. There are also some nicely placed brass instruments that also sound like synthesizers, or they could be synths that sound like brass instruments. Either way, they manage to work well with the rest of the production.

I would have liked to hear a more adventurous beat. Considering that the RZA is heavily involved; one would expect something more engaging. It is not so much that the beat is bad but it borders along the bland. The track felt incomplete, it would have benefited from some appearance from the other Wu members. Raekwon especially would have sounded great on the instrumental; his swaggering presence would have spiced up the track. Overall, I like the song, it is solid, and it is always a pleasant treat to hear any new Wu Tang material, hopefully the new album will be on par with their past releases.

6/10

Song of the day will be Wu-Tang Clang "Only The Rugged Survive".
