Bon Iver "Calgary" song review.

Calgary is one of the largest cities in Canada, located in the province of Alberta. Even though I never been to Calgary, I can only imagine it to be a cold place surrounded by a beautiful landscape, isolated in the woods. This could therefore explain why Bon Iver titled the song “Calgary”. This is the first single from his sophomore album “Bon Iver, Bon Iver” and it is meant to be enjoyed in solitude.

The song begins with Justin Vernon singing “Don’t you cherish me to sleep/never keep your eyelids clipped”.  His voice is placed high in the mix, accompanied by some soft synths. The song gradually builds with some heavy drumming and electric guitar filling in the empty spaces. A nice solo is placed at the climax of the song around the 2:3o mark.

This is a different sound from Bon Iver’s previous work, the song has a very professional sound and quality. The sonic details are very crisp, allowing the listener to hear every instrument clearly. The lyrics are very ambiguous and difficult to decipher. However they add a certain mystery to the song and manage to complement the instruments. Overall I really like the song; it has a great melody and awesome production. Bon Iver manages to maintain the ambiance of the debut album, but it is delivered differently, hopefully the same excellent results carry on throughout the album.

7.5/10

Song of the Day will be "Calgary" from Bon Iver, enjoy.
