During the past year or so Curren$y has slowly garnered a loyal fan base along with some critical acclaim. In 2010 he surprised a lot of people including me by dropping not one but two very good albums, Pilot Talk I and Pilot Talk II. Both albums were produced mostly by Ski Beatz, a producer mostly known for his early 90s work. In those two albums Curren$y seemed to have found his own little niche as an emcee, frequently rapping about getting baked, relaxing and enjoying the simple pleasures of life. He made the mundane sound very appealing, and a great example is the song “Breakfast” on Pilot Talk I. I mean seriously when is the last time you heard a rapper make a whole song, better yet a good song about the first meal of the day.
This year, Curren$y shows no signs of slowing down; he already released a good mixtape called Covert Coup which was completely produced by the Alchemist. The mixtape has a cohesive stoned out boom bap sound that greatly complements the emcee. Now he is releasing another album called “Weekend at Burnies” in a couple of weeks. A single from the album is “This Is the Life” and it maintains the sound that he has crafted but also stretches out a little further.
Backed by a bouncy piano, “This Is the Life”, has Curren$y showcasing his nimble flow that can be an acquired taste for some. His unique rhyme pattern has his lines running a little longer that one would expect, thus making him sound as if he is off beat. But once you get used to his style, it can be quite enjoyable. The production of the song is understated, yet highly pleasant. Curren$y doesn’t stray very far from his normal content, but that doesn’t stop this from being a good track.
