Jamie XX "Far Nearer" song review

Jamie XX is the producer and beat maker from the acclaimed British group The XX. Last year, he made his rounds as a producer by remixing a number of famous songs that included the standout “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele. Jamie XX most notably received the honor to remix the comeback album from Gil Scott Heron “I am New Here” and the remixed album was released under the title “We’re New Here”. In his previous remixes Jamie XX imposed his distinct sound that borrows from the dub-step, garage and house music. The end results of his remixes were very good, consequently creating anticipation for his debut solo album.

Well, that time has arrived and the first official single from Jamie XX has been released. The song is titled “Far Nearer” and it surpasses the high expectations that were placed on the young producer. The song does not stray too far from his prior productions but it does not simply repeat the same formula either. The track has the notable minimalist sound that he has perfected.

The drums are skeletal and hard hitting. They stutter throughout the song leaving empty space between the snares. That space is then fleshed out with a manipulated eerie vocal sample. Steel drums are placed and their bright sound makes the track light and vibrant, perfect for the summer time. The synths also add to that breezy tropical atmosphere and they play a minor but important role behind the rest of the production. It is impressive how Jamie XX produces a beat that accomplishes more by doing less, the minimal sound is walking a very fine line but he somehow pulls it off consistently without being redundant.

8/10
Song of the day will be "Far Nearer"
