DOOM & Ghostface aka DOOMSTARKS: Victory Laps (Madvillianz Remix)

Now, this DOOMSTARKS project has been hotly anticipated for years, in fact, at one point it was announced that the two underground icons will release a joint album together. That has not materialized and probably will not happen in the foreseeable future. It seems as if the duo made a couple of songs and ditched the project all together. One of the fruits of their efforts was the song “Angelz” which appeared on DOOM’s “Born Like This”. The final version of the song sounded quite different from the leaked version. The drums were altered and were fat and sloppy; I really hoped they kept the leak version, but then again, how can I argue against the “Super Villian”.

DOOMSTARKS slyly dropped a new track called “Victory Laps (Madvillianz Remix)” via a cassette, a scheme both absurd but hilarious. I can picture people looking baffled with a cassette in their hands, with no means of playing the damn thing. “Victory Laps” is a lyrical exercise between the two emcees, backed by a smooth lo fi production by Madlib.

DOOM starts off, and tears it up as expected, his voice sounds very deep and raspy. He sounds like he recorded his vocals very close to the microphone, maybe a little too close for comfort. I wonder if he does that on purpose or if it is just an engineering accident, I sense that it is the former rather than the latter. On the flip side, Ghostface sounds very high pitched, almost cartoonish, his verse was inferior to DOOM’s though he had some funny lines. Overall, cool song, something I would expect as a bonus cut, not so much on an album. I have a feeling we are not going to here much more from these two, but I do hope that they prove me wrong.

Song of The Day is "Victory Laps"
